With a variation of stunningly reflective ambient textures, a groundwork of sublime phased transitions, and a beautifully layered sequence of drum patterns, Ilian Tape's producer - Andrea - drops 'Due in Color', a surprisingly nostalgic electronically-inspired album that has all the elements of well-thought out, well-conceptualised and thoroughly consistent production mechanism.
Pitchfork.com has an interesting Album of the Year review that it rates as a 68, published yesterday describing the album as harbouring "voluminous reverb" levels and demonstrating a proposition of the "dreamiest ambient music" perhaps for the year thus far? With both jungle and drum and bass at the centre of the LP's raw and fractious core.
Were these otherwise sporadically constructed underground influences uncovered intentionally? Well, according to a beatportal.com article from 2020, 'Due in Color' is not the first album Andrea has released which has sparked the interest of the Ilian Tape's listening audience in this way, and hopefully for sure, it won't be the last to inspire and motivate.
A second question presents itself. Where does the ambience end and the percussion-focused, jungle-inspired and harder, rhythm-intensive music start? It would be ignorant to overlook the contribution of those particular influences to Andrea's new album, as the factors of this delicately constructed ambient-crossover effort are so resoundingly apparent to anyone who listens to even one single. One is left with a slightly infectious feeling of bewildering elation. The light pads, chords and choppy effects define a frontier approach and should be celebrated for what they intentionally represent, and not for what we all would like them to indirectly represent.
